I offer two different types of brief therapy:
Both are effective but suitable to different needs.
If you are unsure of which would work best for you, I will help you decide after hearing more about you and the problem you face. A description of the brief therapies follows:
- Problem Focused with a Fixed Time Frame.
This is well suited for someone who has a specific issue to resolve which is manageable in a short fixed-time period. The problem is clearly defined. Emphasis is on resolving the problem. Any impediments to the process are examined.
- Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy.
This form of brief therapy treats the whole person rather than focusing on resolving one specific issue. The process is made brief by the therapist pro-actively pointing-out resistence and defenses the patient might exhibit which are counter- productive. By systematically moving defenses aside, the patient is helped to face the underlying emotions, conflicts, and fears. These are then experienced and worked through. By becoming more fully aware of one’s self there is more available free will and fewer hidden obstacles in one’s life. This approach is well suited for someone who has broader issues or a generalized feeling of emotional dysphoria and is able to tolerate a highly interactive and sometimes challenging alliance with the therapist.
I have a Certificate in Brief Therapy from the Washington School of Psychiatry in Washington, D.C.
